Basic Information
This park was established on Febuary 26, 1919. This is located in the northwest corner of Arizona. The 277 mile Colorado River, up to18 miles wide and 1 mile deep, runs straight through the canyon. The Grand Canyon takes up about 1.2 million acres. About 2 billion years old, half of earths total lifespan. The Colorado River has been there for 6millions years.
The rock formations are astounding arrays of red, orange, and purple. The annual average precipitation is 16 inches. on the south rim, and 25 inches on the North Rim. This is home to several endangered or threatened animal species. The South Rim is open 24 hours a day every day a week. The canyon runs east to west across the Colorado Plateau. It stretches from Lees Ferry, AZ in the east to Arizona's Grand Wash Cliffs on the west. This can be seen from outer space its so big. Supai, AZ is the only town in the inner town. The capital of the Havasupai Indian Reservation. Each Layer of rock tells their own story. Geologists go there to study the earth's natural forces. Periods as long as a billion years is missing in the geologic record.
